First Step Questions

What is the first step in getting a book published?

Ok, I decided to write a book. Now what do I do? Does anyone know what the first step is?
I wrote the book. Now what?

1 – write book
2 – edit it
3 – get critique
4 – edit it
5 – research publishing
6 – select appropriate agent
7 – send query
8 – wait
9 – if agent interested, they ask for manuscript
10 – wait
11 – if agent still interested, they offer contract
12 – wait while agent shops manuscript to editors

If first agent isn’t interested, you get a rejection, and you select another agent to query. Even good books have been rejected many times before getting published.

You do not need to copyright it, because it already has copyright protection. You only need to register a copyright when there is a need to do so, like when getting published (and a reputable publisher will do this for you).

Mailing a copy to yourself (known as a poor man’s copyright) is a publishing myth. It does not register a copyright and it does not legally prove you wrote anything.

You need to do a little research on publishing so that you know the difference between traditional and vanity (self publishing) presses – and athena press and libris are both vanity publishers, last time I checked.

Traditional publishers are in the business of selling books to readers. They select, edit, market, pre-sell, and distribute books to stores and libraries. They do not make any money unless the books sell. They pay advances and royalties. The do not charge the author for any of these services. Most traditionally published authors sell more than 1000 copies.

Vanity presses are in the business of selling printint services to writers. They do not care if books sell or not because they made their money off the author. They generally do not offer quality editing, if they actually offer any at all. They do not develop marketing plans, pre-sell to stores or libraries (because stores and libraries do not want them), and most of them lack adequate distribution networks. They do not pay real advances ($1 is a joke) and even though they claim big royalty rates, too few books ever sell to actually collect those royalties. Few self published authors ever sell more than 50 books.

Get a copy of the Writer’s Market or Author’s Yearbook. Most of what you need to know is in there. Articles generally cover topics such as manuscript formatting, query letter and synopsis, and a brief overview of the industry. There are listings of agents and publishers as well.

Consider joining a reputable writing group (one that is not tied to a vanity press as a marketing tool). I like absolutewrite.com/forum (the watercooler) because it is a large group, many of the members are published by tradtional houses, and there is a wealth of good information available through links and ‘sticky threads’.

Which is the first step to buy a property?

The first step is to get pre-qualified for a loan, so you know how much you can spend. You don’t want to waste time looking at million dollar homes when yo can only afford a fraction of that.
